Reason #3 – They Won’t Change Because They Work, and “If It Ain’t Broke…”

There’s too much change in the world today and I’m actually quite sick of it. Aren’t you? Many of you are too, right? Google has the same interface and search engine look ever since I can remember. It’s simple, effective and great. It does the job.

I’d say that out of 100 times that I look for something that only 1 time will I not find what I’m looking for in the first page or two. Sometimes that’s even because I don’t use the right search methods and techniques.

Google is still the King of Search, in my book, and everyone I know uses Google and loves it, and I’m sure you agree…and I have never heard anyone complain about Google either. Now you know why I don’t think that will change.

One more thing, sites like Yahoo and others probably won’t listen to this, or they’ll realize they can’t win and just join…my only concern when Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, MSN and even Dogpile realize this. But what will happen if and when Google becomes a total monopoly? They’re almost there now!

Apr 23

Reason #2 – Their Primary Focus is Specialized, So They’ll Always Be Best!

While others over-differentiate, or focus on too much of everything rather than remain core and specialized to what the do best, Google differentiates to only the 20% level, at least it seems like it, and the other 80% is still focused on what they are best known for and always will be if they keep it up…search engine results and above all, the bottom line: getting people the top quality information that they need and are searching for.

Google is the best at what it does as a search engine. I’ve tried other search engines and Google beats them because their algorithm must be better. I’m sure that their algorithm is probably more secure than the richest bank’s vault in Switzerland, Luxembourg or Liechtenstein.

I think it’s another one of their core Biz secrets, how they stay 80% or more on what hey do best, but it’s obvious…what else pops up at you when you g to their homepage? A search engine box – in your face!  Nice…

Is Google your home page?

I see it more peoples’ home page than ever before. Let’s briefly look at why. I know. More of the obvious right? Well, in case you don’t know or have never thought about it, here goes…and some MBA insight as well…

3 Reasons to Make Google Home

Reason #1 – Their Page… Loads the Fastest of Any Other Page!

Do you think they did this by accident? Before computers had the memory and processing power like they do today, one of the reasons why I and many others made Google the homepage was, because it loaded the quickest, and I was sick and tired of slow loading web pages!

This built instant credibility and trust, and made people love it from the start…a great first impression and an awesome Biz strategy by the way…do it right the first time! Spend the time, and don’t release until it’s ready. I think even Microsoft could learn something here.

Finally, for this point, something that back then and even today still loads in the blink of an eye (see reason 3) makes Google tops, a small but important detail! So I bet it’s one of their core Biz strategies to be the fastest loading page on earth. Smart move Google!

What is Change Management?
icon1 QualityBlogger | icon2 Change Management | icon4 01 21st, 2009| icon3No Comments »

Defining Change Management

Change management is about being prepared for change in an organization in such a way as to embrace it, and then thrive on it. We often hear the expression, “change is the only constant”, and I believe this is largely true.

In the business environment, we can learn a lot about Change Management. It involves a few things such as paying attention to market indicators and opportunities.

It’s also about embracing change, providing leadership from the top down, communicating and setting clear objectives, as well as staying within the scope of what their reputation as a company is known for.

Preparing for change using change management

First, a company needs to pay attention to key market indicators that reveal where things are headed, and not close its mind to them. In other words, a company must be willing to adopt a cautious approach within change, but be willing to change, rather than resist it.

This calls for a corporate philosophy of change management, which stresses the need to be adaptable and flexible, or what others have called “ambidextrous”

In line with such a new way of conducting business, the BOD (board of directors) should hire the right leadership that’s willing to smartly embrace change and gracefully overcome any resistance.

Once the right leadership is in place, then the first point about creating an “ambidextrous organization” can be carried out. This requires strong leadership from the top down

This also requires buy-in form the bottom up, which leads me to my next point in part 2 of Basics of Change Management. Stay tuned…

How dare anyone say blogs are just a passing fad…

The answer is an emphatic no.

The web has changed a lot, and is always evolving as there come new presentation technologies and opportunities.  Blogs will continue to improve and evolve…what looks good yesterday will look old tomorrow.

I still can’t believe how websites used to look back in the day when I see books with pictures of them…we used to think they were cool…now they look so lame…

We have the 1960’s and 1970’s carpet and floor and furniture lime green syndrome as applied to websites…blogs will be no different,…the blogs of tomorrow will knock the socks off those today…but they are no mere fad

The web is no fad, neither are websites…blogs are no different!  That’s what I say anyhow…maybe blogs will be replaced by the newer term for it…but the idea is the same…they’re here to stay.

I did a “Blogging” Keyword Search The Other Day…

Know what I found? Many people are asking the most basic questions about Blogs…still! If you’re one of them, don’t feel bad…but…it’s time you learned exactly what a blog is.

The most popular questions I found being asked about blogs, blogging and the blogosphere include:

  • What is blogging?
  • Define blogging
  • Explain blogging
  • The meaning of blogging
  • Blogging advice
  • and of course the infamous “What the hell is Blogging?”

So What Is Blogging?

I define blogging in the following 5 ways

  • Blogging is finally everyone’s chance to say something and express their opinions to the whole world in an instant!
  • Blogging is everyone’s chance to finally be heard…their soap box or pedestal, their potential claim to fame!
  • Blogging is an act of freedom of expression and thought put on virtual paper like a bulletin board in the sky
  • Blogging is someone’s way to get published, seen by the world, for free without having to be a writer or author!
  • Blogging is for jibber jabber and making comments even when what you say may not be meaningful, if jibber jabber is your forte…

How does QualityBlogger define blogging?

I truly think a blog needs to give some kind of value, and preferably to others not just to ones self.

The Blogosphere is a sort of Community…sort of…

Selfish bloggers blog only for themselves. Unselfish bloggers give something back or “pay it forward” as some would call it.

But since all bloggers belong to the blogosphere community, they prefer give and take, giving and receiving…so everyone gets value. This is or should be an unwritten rule for all Bloggers.

What You Can Do To Be a Good (or Better) Blogger

  • Be responsible and don’t say anything discriminatory or unethical…don’t hurt anyone else with your blog…watch what you publish or say, because the whole world can read it and see it!
  • Don’t spam or troll, don’t incite or provoke…just like in real life…there is definitely a law of reciprocity in the blogosphere…you know…the realm or community in which people blog…
  • Be a good steward. Don’t waste others time. Have a purpose for why you blog. The blog world is getting too polluted by irrelevant, non-valuable spam. Be what I call a “QualityBlogger” the underlying theme of my site to promoting the concept of adding value to the blogosphere…
  • Don’t scam. Give value. It’s better to give than receive in the world and the same if not more so true, in the blog world

I hope I’ve Defined and Explained What A Blog Is All About…

There are probably many other things I could have said about blogs and blogging. But hopefully I’ve covered the basics. There are several good books out there about blogging worth reading, and many can be found (for free) at your local library.

Blogs are definitely vehicles of the ego, and vehicles of marketing and all sorts of other things. They can bring great satisfaction…or great mischief. So be careful.

Now that you know what a blog is, as well as how you should behave in the blogosphere….are you going to become a blogger too…oh…and a “QualityBlogger” I hope?!

In my next post, I’ll answer the question, “Are Blogs Just a Passing Fad?”

Dec 28

The must know definitions include:
Quality Blogging: The process of creating a blog rich in meaningful content that provides something of meaning or value to others.

Quality Blogging Movement: A movement that emphasizes quality blogging in order to keep the blogosphere from getting over-saturated with spam and junk.

The goal is to promote blogs that add value and quality to others not just to oneself. Also, continuous improvement of the quality of your blog is key. That is the theme of my blog, in case you didn’t know, and why you should subscribe. See you next post.

Information Overload is…

Too much overwhelming information, often unnecessary and way too distracting, that pulls us away from doing what we ought to be doing.

Why Information Overload is such a problem today

We live in the information age. Our entire existence seems to now revolve around computers, the Internet and information. Information is now known as “intellectual capital” and is said to be a new form of wealth and commodity.

In the movie Wall Street, a movie of the 1980’s, the ambitious investor Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas) said “The most valuable commodity I know of is information”. So information is indeed important…but it must be

  • The right kind
  • At the right time
  • In the right form
  • Available when we need it!

The Problem Today - Too Much Irrelevant Information

How do we deal with all of this information? Simple. By eliminating ALL of the unnecessary information and only keeping what’s absolutely necessary. Nice to have information doesn’t help us. Only highly useful information that helps us does.

This problem is only getting worse. We must continue to minimize and make sure the information we read and keep is very relevant to what we do. All of this other “FYI” information is not needed.

Managing and Finding Information

If you need something, a search engine like Google helps us find the relevant information. No puring through files or folders. It’s concept is flat…just use the right keywords and phrases or try several and you’ll probably find what you’re looking for with probably an 80% success rate using Google!

No need to keep it, so no need to manage it. Just go back to Google when you need it again!

I hope this has helped you…
